National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT), London Productions 2024.

For over fifty years, the National Youth Music Theatre has been providing workshops, courses and productions for young people led by industry professionals. Each year sees production of three or four musical shows showcasing young people on stage, in the orchestra or band, behind the scenes and on the creative team “all with the same energy, passion and professionalism as those on the West End”. In 2024, NYMT staged three productions in London, almost back-to-back, with very little time in between. This necessitated the design of a lighting rig which could adapt to the needs of the three shows without any major equipment changes.

Cameo Lighting fixtures were used to meet the needs of all 3 productions, including the EVOS W7 LED Wash Moving Head, PIXBAR 400 IP G2 IP65 RGBW-LED Bar, AZOR SP2 Spot Profile Moving Head and the Cameo AZOR S2 Spot Moving Head.

Three different British lighting designers collaborated on the lighting design; Jamie Platt for ‘Our House’, Bethany Gupwell for ‘Catastrophe Bay’ and Aaron J. Dootson for ‘Into the Woods’.

Jamie Platt described the rig as “comprehensive and versatile with the Evos W7 forming an overhead backlight system, and the Azor SP2 Spot Profile forming the main face-light and shuttering top-light system. Additional Azor S2 Spot Moving Heads were dotted in the gaps to supplement the rig, with six of them in key 3/4 positions upstage left and right. I used the PIXBAR 400 IP G2 as both a back wall skim and as backlight through some doorways where space was tight. It excelled at both tasks and the homogenised lenses meant that even when seen from the front row, it was a good-looking fixture.”

Aaron J. Dootson also praised the Cameo Lighting rig: “The AZOR SP2s were used as shutter units, combined with a wash toplight in the form of the EVOS W7. The AZOR S2s were deployed as FOH spots for special shots and textures. The PIXBAR IP G2 also surprised me with its light intensity and spectacular colours.”
