When a class is loud, fast and full of movement, the instructor’s voice has to cut through music, fans and floor noise without crackle, drop-out or feedback. That is what gym and fitness microphones are for: headworn headset mics designed for sweat, motion and long teaching days - not conference rooms.
Fitness Audio has specialised in this niche since the mid-1990s in Australia. Engineer Peter Paisley and gym sound specialist John Penhallow set out to stop ordinary presenter headsets failing in aerobics rooms. From that work came Aeromic in the late 1990s, now an industry benchmark, with tens of thousands used worldwide. The same thinking later produced everyday studio headsets and a cycling-specific shape.
The range splits by how demanding the timetable is and how the instructor moves.
Everyday studio headsets suit yoga, Pilates, aqua, circuits, boxing and mixed group fitness at a few classes a day. They use a sealed, noise-cancelling, waterproof capsule, a reinforced adjustable frame and a steel cable with a sweat-protected connector. An extended-boom option helps larger heads or a more forward capsule position so breath noise stays down and cues stay on-axis.
High-energy headsets are the workhorses for full-time instructors. A one-piece mouldable frame with no exposed metal stays planted through burpees, shuffles and dance cardio. A low-sensitivity capsule with a carbon collar and double mesh resists sweat and spit, gives more usable volume before feedback, and works cleanly with studio processors. An all-steel cable and multi-layer connector complete the moisture defence. These are the mics for HIIT, Zumba, Body Pump, combat classes and busy club timetables.
Cycling headsets share that same sweat-proof build but use a J-curve boom. In spin and indoor cycling the instructor stays in a forward lean; sweat that would pool on a straight boom is directed off the frame instead. The same shape also suits hot yoga.
