Sound Masking

Sound Masking

Sound masking systems are an effective acoustic solution that adds a carefully engineered background sound to a space, making speech less intelligible and reducing unwanted noise distractions. Often described as a subtle, airflow-like sound, these systems significantly improve speech privacy while enhancing overall comfort and productivity.

Our range features professional Cambridge Qt sound masking solutions, including single-zone and multi-zone controllers capable of covering areas from small offices up to large multi-floor buildings. You’ll find active and passive emitters for flexible ceiling installation, along with a full selection of mounting hardware (surface, pendant, plenum, and I-beam brackets), power supplies, and room controls. Specialised options are available for conference rooms and healthcare environments requiring targeted patient privacy.

These commercial sound masking systems are widely used in open-plan offices, corporate headquarters, call centres, and legal or financial consulting rooms where confidentiality is essential. They are equally valuable in hospitals, doctors’ surgeries, banks, and any space where conversations need to remain private. Additional applications include government buildings, research facilities, and co-working spaces.

By reducing acoustic distractions and protecting sensitive discussions, sound masking creates calmer, more focused work environments. Explore our full range of sound masking solutions today to improve speech privacy, boost concentration, and enhance the acoustic comfort of your commercial spaces.

FAQs

What is a sound masking system?

It adds a low, even, airflow-like sound so nearby speech is harder to understand and office noise is less distracting. Open-plan offices, call centres, banks, consulting rooms and clinics use it for speech privacy and to boost concentration levels.

How is sound masking different from background music?

Music is content. Masking is a shaped noise, set just loud enough that conversation does not carry. A café playlist will not give speech privacy in a legal office, and a masking system is not a BGM player.

Is sound masking the same as white noise?

No. White noise is a flat spectrum and usually sounds harsh. Commercial masking is tuned, often compared to airflow, so it covers speech frequencies without drawing attention. Level and spectrum are set for the room, not left at one volume.

Where is sound masking used?

Open-plan offices, headquarters, call centres, legal and financial rooms, banks, hospitals, surgeries, government buildings and co-working spaces. Conference-room and healthcare controllers exist where the brief is a private meeting or patient confidentiality.

Will sound masking make a room completely private?

It reduces intelligibility. It does not soundproof a wall. Thin partitions and open ceilings still need acoustic treatment. Masking is one layer, with layout and absorption, not a substitute for a solid door.

What is a sound masking emitter?

The small ceiling device that produces the masking sound. Active emitters have their own level control. Passive emitters are driven from the controller. Packs come in black or white, with surface, pendant, plenum or beam mounts to suit the ceiling.

Do I need one zone or several?

A single-zone controller suits a small office. Multi-zone controllers cover different floors or departments at different levels — a quiet boardroom should not run at call-centre level. Match the controller to the number of areas, not only the floor area.

Can staff control the masking level?

Room controls and networked controllers allow authorised adjustment. Day-to-day users should not have a volume knob they can turn off. Masking only works if it stays on at the commissioned level.

Does a sound masking system need a PA amplifier?

No. It is its own system: controller, emitters and power supply. Do not feed masking into the background-music speakers unless the design specifically says so. Speech paging and masking are separate jobs.

Who can help specify a sound masking system?

Commercial Audio Solutions stocks Cambridge Qt controllers, emitters and mounting hardware. Call 01663 767888 or email sales@commercialaudiosolutions.com with the floor type, open-plan or cellular, and whether you need office, conference or healthcare privacy.
