Cabinet (box) loudspeakers sit on a wall, bracket or stand rather than in the ceiling. They are used for background music, paging and louder foreground music in hospitality, retail, conference rooms, places of worship, schools, sports halls and warehouses. Wooden cabinets suit venues that want a warmer sound; ABS cabinets tend to be more economical, impact resistant, may be water resistant for use outdoors and suit tougher sites like schools, sports facilities and warehouses.
Choose cabinets when there is no false ceiling, you need more bass or higher output, you want well-aimed coverage, or the space is outdoor / damp. Ceiling speakers stay more discreet in a tiled ceiling; cabinets give you aiming, higher power options (including active PA models) and weatherproof options.
Many commercial cabinets include a 100V transformer with selectable tappings as well as a low-impedance (8 or 16 ohm) tap, so the same box can sit on a distributed paging/BGM line or a small 8 ohm amp. Active models (such as LD Systems SAT A G2, ICOA, STINGER) have a built-in amplifier and do not use 100V tappings — they need a mains feed instead.
IP rating tells you how well the cabinet keeps out dust and water. Use an IP-rated model for beer gardens, entrances, poolside areas and covered outdoor walkways, and match the rating to the exposure (splash vs driving rain). Passive cabinets (eg LD Systems SAT G2 and most 100V wall boxes) need a separate commercial amplifier. Active cabinets (SAT A G2, ICOA, ICOA PRO, STINGER G3) have the amp built in; some add Bluetooth and app control. Use passive + 100V for multi-speaker distributed systems; use active boxes for portable PA, a compact live sound setup or a single high-output pair.
Most install cabinets are supplied with a U-bracket or wall plate so you can hang them horizontally or vertically and aim them at the listening area. Slimline / column cabinets (for example SAT 442 G2) sit close to the wall and work well in corridors and worship spaces. Check load rating of the wall or pole and keep cable entries pointing downward on outdoor boxes so water cannot run into the connector.
Compact 4"–6.5" cabinets suit near-field Background Music. 8" two-way boxes add more bass for bars and retail. 12"–15" active PA cabinets (like ICOA / STINGER and the 21" ICOA PRO sub) are for foreground music and live sound. On 100V systems, add up the selected taps and add about 20% amplifier headroom.
Yes. Many of the cabinet speakers on this page are stocked in black and white (including column speakers). Match white to painted walls and ceilings; use black in dark bars, stages and clubs. Outdoor loudspeakers on the site are also typically offered in black or white.
