FAQs

What is a commercial radio tuner used for?

It feeds live radio into a shop, hotel, café, office, gym or waiting-area PA. FM, DAB+ and internet-radio tuners give a simple background-music source that runs all day and plugs into a mixer-amp or zone system.

Should I choose FM, DAB+ or internet radio?

FM needs an aerial and works without broadband. DAB+ is clearer and offers more stations, but still needs a DAB aerial and a signal in the building. Internet radio needs a stable network and can reach stations FM and DAB do not carry. Many commercial units include more than one of these.

How is a radio tuner different from a media player?

A tuner is for live broadcast. A media player adds USB, SD or CD playback, and some all-in-one units do both. Use a tuner when the client wants a radio station. Use a media player or streamer when they want their own playlist.

Do I need an aerial for a commercial radio tuner?

Yes for FM and DAB+. A whip on the back of the rack often fails inside a steel building. Fit an external or loft aerial and a proper coax run if reception is weak. Internet radio does not need an aerial, but it does need a reliable network connection.

Can a radio tuner play Bluetooth or USB as well?

Selected models add Bluetooth, USB or SD so a phone or memory stick can take over when radio is not wanted. Treat Bluetooth as a convenience input. Wired or network sources are more reliable for all-day BGM.

Are commercial radio tuners rack mountable?

Many commercial installation tuners are 19-inch rack units so they sit with the amplifier. Some have optional racking kits which allow two musoc sources to sit side by side in a rack. Leave ventilation and a route for the aerial lead. Compact / freestanding tuners can be mounted on a shelf or in a cupboard if a full rack is not fitted.

Do I need a music licence to play radio in a business?

Usually yes. A radio station’s broadcast licence does not cover public performance in a shop, gym or restaurant. In the UK that is normally TheMusicLicence (PRS and PPL). Check the current rules for your usage — see TheMusicLicence.

How do I connect a radio tuner to a 100V PA system?

Use the tuner’s line output into a mixer-amp, zone mixer or power-amp input. Do not connect it to the 100V speaker line. Set the tuner volume once, then let the mixer or wall plate control the room.
